The Islamic month of Dhul Hijjah is one of great significance and blessings. It is the last month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is a time when Muslims are encouraged to increase their acts of worship and devotion to Allah.
The significance of Dhul Hijjah is rooted in the two major events that take place during this month, the pilgrimage of Hajj and the festival of Qurbani, Eid ul-Adha. These events are considered holy and are blessed by Allah, as evidenced by the oath He swears by the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah in the Quran.
The Prophet Muhammad (saw) said, ‘There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than in these (ten) days’, highlighting the importance of making the most of this sacred time. Here are some Sunnahs that Muslims can follow during this month:
- Fasting
Fasting on the first nine days of Dhul Hijjah is highly recommended, with the ninth day being particularly significant as it is the day of Arafat. Fasting on this day is believed to expiate sins from the previous and coming year.
- Reading the Quran:
Building a strong relationship with the Quran is important and this month is an excellent opportunity to read it and understand its teachings.
- Giving Sadaqah
The first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are considered the most blessed and it is an excellent time to give charity (Sadaqah or Zakat) as the rewards of these acts will be maximized and amplified. Your charity will also aid you on the day of judgment in the hereafter.
- Repentance
Hajj is the ultimate act of worship for seeking forgiveness from Allah and expiating sins, but many Muslims may not have the opportunity to go on Hajj. Dhul-Hijjah is the perfect time for Muslims to repent and seek forgiveness for their sins, even if they are not on pilgrimage.
- Praying Eid Salah
Eid Salah is an important act of worship for Muslims to partake in, as it is a way to show our Islamic identity as a community. The Prophet (saw) always attended Eid Salah, and his companions continued this tradition after his passing.
- Giving Qurbani
Giving Qurbani represents letting go of worldly attachments and is a way to show devotion to Allah. It is believed that Allah will return His love by granting mercy and rewarding piety.
In summary, Dhul Hijjah is a month filled with opportunities to increase acts of worship and draw closer to Allah. It is a time to fast, read the Quran, give Sadaqah, repent, pray Eid Salah, and give Qurbani. By following these Sunnahs, we can make the most of this blessed time and reap the rewards that Allah has promised. Remember, it is not only about performing these acts but also about doing them with the right intention and devotion to Allah. May Allah accept our worship and grant us His forgiveness during this sacred month.
