In the lunar calendar, Dhul Hijjah occurs at the end, making it the last month of the Islamic year. This month is extremely important as Allah has immensely blessed it. The believers who engage with good practices and avoid sins are eligible in obtaining these many blessings and rewards.
Its significance derives from the fact that Allah (SWT) has blessed it with containing the holy events such as the pilgrimage of Hajj and the festival of the blessed sacrifice, Qurbani Eid ul-Adha.
The first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah are so sacred that Allah swears an oath by them: ‘By the dawn; by the ten nights’ [The Noble Quran, 89:1-2]
Therefore, we should increase our acts of worship during this sacred time. The Prophet (saw) said, ‘There are no days in which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than in these (ten) days’. [Abu Dawud]
Here's few Sunnahs to follow during this month
- Fasting
Fasting on the first 9 days are beloved to Allah (SWT), and especially on the ninth of Dhul Hijjah, which is the day of Arafat because fasting on this day means our sins from the previous and coming year will be expiated. This practice is Sunnah for Muslims and highly recommended.
- Read the Quran
Create a beautiful relationship with the book of Allah (SWT) in Dhul Hijjah. If you can, read its translated version and take the time to understand and appreciate the words of Allah (SWT).
- Give Sadaqah
These 10 blessed days are most beloved to Allah (SWT) and are an amazing time to give charity because the rewards of your Sadaqah or Zakat will be maximized and amplified. Your charity will also aid you on the day of judgement in the hereafter.
- Repent
Hajj is the ultimate act of worship we can perform as Muslims to seek forgiveness from Allah and expiate our sins, but most of us are lucky if we can go even once in our lifetime. That is why Dhul-Hijjah is the perfect gift from Allah, allowing us to repent and seek forgiveness for our sins even if we are not on pilgrimage.
- Pray Eid Salah
Eid Salah is one of the ways we show our Islamic identity as a community and is therefore a very important act of worship for all Muslims to partake in. The Prophet (saw) always attended Eid Salah, as did his companions after he had passed away.
- Give Qurbanı
Qurbani represents the beauty of letting go of your worldly attachments in the same way that Ibrahim (AS) did, and your sacrifice means that Allah (SWT) will always return His love to you by granting you mercy and rewarding your piety.
