“It is He who created you from one soul and created from it its mate that he might dwell in security with her… ” [7:189]
Islam places a strong emphasis on the commitment and sanctity of marriage. It holds a unique status, blending both sacramental and contractual elements. Marriage in Islam is viewed as a challenging commitment, aimed at the preservation of the human race.
The Quran establishes marriage as a highly recommended and prioritized act, stating: “And marry the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male slaves and female slaves. If they should be poor, Allah will enrich them from His bounty, and Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.” [24:32] This verse encourages marriage for all single individuals, specifically emphasizing the importance of choosing a righteous partner. This includes not only having the correct attitude and mindset but also having the necessary capabilities to fulfill the responsibilities of marriage.
Islam emphasizes that wealth should not be a barrier to marriage. In some cases, potential suitors may be rejected based on their financial status and some families may prevent their children from seeking marriage unless a certain income is earned. However, the character and qualities of a potential spouse are more important than wealth. If one is unable to fulfill the rights and responsibilities of a potential spouse or afford the necessities of life, seeking marriage may be postponed.
According to Prophet Muhammad, “O young men, whoever among you can afford it, let him get married, for it is more effective in lowering the gaze and guarding chastity, and whoever cannot then he should fast, for it will be a restraint (wija’) for him.”
Both husband and wife have equal roles and responsibilities in a marriage. Spouses serve as each other’s protection and support, being present for each other in times of vulnerability. As Allah states, “They are clothing for you and you are clothing for them…” [2:187]
The Quran verse “O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women…” [4:1] emphasizes the bond between man and woman in marriage as both partners were created for each other.
In Islam, marriage is primarily a partnership based on equality and defined roles. May Allah bless us all with the right partner in our lives.
