November 5, 2026 · 7 min read min read
The Story of Prophet Yusef

The story of Prophet Yusef, more commonly written Yusuf, is the only prophetic story told in full within a single surah of the Quran. It begins with a child’s dream of eleven stars, moves through jealousy, betrayal, temptation, and prison, and ends with Yusuf governing Egypt’s treasuries and reuniting with his family. Allah Himself describes it as the best of stories, because it reveals how patience, faith, and integrity lead to honor even after the hardest trials. Readers of every age find in it a timeless and comforting message that Allah’s plan unfolds with wisdom, even when the path seems dark.

Who Was Prophet Yusuf?

Yusuf was the son of Prophet Ya’qub, the grandson of Ishaq, and the great-grandson of Ibrahim, peace be upon them. The story of Prophet Yusef centers on his journey from trial to honor. Key facts about him include:

  • Father: Prophet Ya’qub, also called Israel.
  • Full brother: Binyamin, the youngest of the brothers.
  • Surah: Surah Yusuf, the twelfth chapter of the Quran.
  • Position: guardian of the storehouses and minister of Egypt.

The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: “The noble one, son of the noble one, son of the noble one, son of the noble one, is Yusuf, son of Ya’qub, son of Ishaq, son of Ibrahim.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari 3382)

Yusuf’s Dream of Eleven Stars

The story opens with young Yusuf telling his father that he saw eleven stars, the sun, and the moon prostrating to him. Ya’qub recognized the dream as a sign of future honor and warned him not to tell his brothers, fearing that Satan would provoke their envy against him.

Yusuf and His Brothers and the Well

The Story of Prophet Yusef

Yusuf’s brothers felt that their father loved Yusuf and Binyamin more than them, and their jealousy turned into a dangerous plan:

  1. They persuaded Ya’qub to let Yusuf go out with them to play.
  2. They threw him into the depths of a well.
  3. They returned at night weeping, carrying his shirt stained with false blood.
  4. Ya’qub did not believe them and turned to Allah with patience.
  5. A passing caravan found Yusuf and sold him in Egypt for a small price.

Yusuf and the Wife of Al-Aziz

Yusuf grew up in the house of al-Aziz, a high official of Egypt, where he faced a severe test of chastity. The Quran highlights several moments:

  • The wife of al-Aziz tried to seduce him, but he sought refuge in Allah and refused.
  • When the women of the city criticized her, she invited them, and they cut their hands in amazement at his appearance.
  • Yusuf prayed that prison was dearer to him than what they invited him to.

Allah says: “The woman in whose house he lived tried to seduce him. She locked the doors and said, ‘Come to me.’ He replied, ‘I seek refuge in Allah! My master has treated me well. Indeed, wrongdoers will never succeed.’”

(Surah Yusuf 12:23)

Yusuf in Prison and Dream Interpretation

Although innocent, Yusuf was imprisoned, yet prison became a place of dawah and a turning point in his life.

The Two Prisoners

Two young men shared his cell and asked him to interpret their dreams. Before answering, Yusuf invited them to worship Allah alone. He then explained that one would again serve wine to the king, while the other would be executed.

The King’s Dream

Years later, the king saw a puzzling dream, and the freed prisoner remembered Yusuf. His interpretation was clear:

  1. Seven fat cows eaten by seven lean ones meant seven years of plenty followed by seven years of drought.
  2. The green and dry ears of grain pointed to storing the harvest in its ears.
  3. A year of relief and rain would come after the drought.

Before leaving prison, Yusuf asked that his innocence be confirmed, and the wife of al-Aziz admitted the truth.

Yusuf as the Minister of Egypt

The king appointed Yusuf over the storehouses of the land after he described himself as a knowledgeable guardian. During the famine, his brothers came seeking grain, and events moved toward reunion:

  1. Yusuf recognized his brothers, but they did not recognize him.
  2. He asked them to bring their younger brother Binyamin on their next visit.
  3. He kept Binyamin with him by placing the king’s cup in his bag.
  4. On a later visit, he revealed his identity and forgave them completely.

قال الله تعالى: ﴿قَالَ اجْعَلْنِي عَلَىٰ خَزَائِنِ الْأَرْضِ ۖ إِنِّي حَفِيظٌ عَلِيمٌ﴾

(سورة يوسف 12:55)

Allah says: “He said, ‘Appoint me over the storehouses of the land. Indeed, I am a knowledgeable and trustworthy guardian.’”

(Surah Yusuf 12:55)

Yaqub’s Grief and Loss of Sight

Throughout these years, Ya’qub never stopped hoping. His eyes turned white from sorrow, yet he complained only to Allah. Yusuf sent his shirt with his brothers, and when it was cast over Ya’qub’s face, his sight returned. The family moved to Egypt, and Yusuf’s childhood dream was fulfilled when his parents and brothers bowed before him in respect.

Why Is Surah Yusuf Called Ahsan Al-Qasas?

Allah describes this account in the third verse of Surah Yusuf as the best of stories. Scholars offer several reasons:

  • It is told completely in one surah, from beginning to end.
  • It covers a wide range of human experiences, from envy to forgiveness.
  • It ends with reunion, honor, and the fulfillment of a dream.
  • It contains lessons in faith, ethics, leadership, and family relations.

Allah says: “In their stories there is certainly a lesson for people of understanding. This is not a fabricated account, but a confirmation of what came before it, an explanation of what is needed, and guidance and mercy for people who believe.”

(Surah Yusuf 12:111)
