The Story of Prophet Nuh is one of the most powerful accounts in the Quran, describing nearly a thousand years of patient preaching, a massive ark built by divine command, and a flood that ended a long era of disbelief. Nuh, peace be upon him, called his people to worship Allah alone using every possible method, yet only a few believed. When his people persisted in arrogance, Allah saved Nuh and the believers on the ark and destroyed the deniers, including his own son. This story teaches perseverance, trust in Allah, and the truth that faith, not lineage, brings salvation.
Who Was Prophet Nuh?
Nuh is the first messenger Allah sent to the people of the earth after they fell into idol worship. The Story of Prophet Nuh begins with his long mission among them. Key facts about him include:
- Rank: one of the five greatest messengers, known as Ulul Azm.
- Mission: calling his people to abandon idols and worship Allah alone.
- Duration of dawah: 950 years, as stated in Surah Al-Ankabut.
- Mentions in the Quran: named in many surahs, with a full surah bearing his name.
In the Hadith of intercession, the people will say to Nuh: “O Nuh, you are the first of the messengers sent to the people of the earth.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 3340; Sahih Muslim 194)
The Idols of Nuh’s People (Wadd, Suwa, Yaghuth)

The people of Nuh fell into idol worship gradually. According to Ibn Abbas, the idols carried the names of righteous men who had died, and Satan encouraged later generations to make statues of them until they were worshipped. The Quran names five of these idols:
- Wadd
- Suwa’
- Yaghuth
- Ya’uq
- Nasr
The Dawah Methods of Prophet Nuh
Surah Nuh records how Nuh tried every approach to reach the hearts of his people. His methods included:
- Calling them night and day without growing weary.
- Speaking to them openly in public gatherings.
- Advising them privately and in secret.
- Promising that seeking forgiveness would bring rain, wealth, children, and gardens.
- Pointing to the creation of the heavens, the earth, and their own stages of life as signs of Allah’s power.
Allah says: “He said, ‘My Lord, I have called my people night and day, but my calling has only increased their avoidance.’”
(Surah Nuh 71:5–6)
Nuh’s Ark and the Great Flood in Islam
After centuries of rejection, Allah informed Nuh that no more of his people would believe and commanded him to build the ark. The events unfolded in this order:
- Nuh built the ark under Allah’s watchful care and guidance.
- His people mocked him each time they passed by.
- When the sign appeared and water gushed from the earth, Allah commanded him to board.
- Rain poured from the sky and springs burst from the ground until the waters met.
- The ark sailed on waves like mountains, carrying the believers to safety.
Who Was on the Ark?
Allah instructed Nuh to carry specific passengers aboard:
- A pair of every kind of animal, male and female.
- His family, except those who had rejected faith.
- The believers, who were few in number.
The Son of Nuh Who Drowned

Among the most moving scenes is Nuh calling his son to board the ark. The son refused, claiming a mountain would protect him, but Nuh warned that no one would be saved from Allah’s command except those He shows mercy. A wave came between them, and the son drowned. When Nuh asked Allah about his son, Allah explained that he was not of his family because his deeds were unrighteous.
Allah says: “Nuh called to his son, who was apart from them, ‘My dear son, board with us and do not remain with the disbelievers.’ He replied, ‘I will take refuge on a mountain that will protect me from the water.’ Nuh said, ‘There is no protection today from Allah’s command except for those to whom He shows mercy.’ Then a wave came between them, and his son was among those who drowned.”
(Surah Hud 11:42–43)
Where Did Nuh’s Ark Land? Mount Judi
When the flood ended, Allah commanded the earth to swallow its water and the sky to withhold its rain. The ark came to rest on Mount Judi, which many scholars locate in northern Mesopotamia, near the borders of present-day Turkey and Iraq.

FAQs
Was the flood of Nuh global or local?
Scholars hold two views. Some believe the flood covered the entire earth, since Nuh's people were all of humanity at that time. Others hold it was limited to the land of his people. Both views agree on its divine purpose.
How many people were on the ark?
The Quran states only that few believed with Nuh. Commentators mention different numbers, with some reports saying about eighty people, along with Nuh's believing family members. These specific figures come mainly from historical narrations rather than from authentic religious texts.
What happened to the wife of Nuh?
Surah At-Tahrim mentions Nuh's wife as an example of disbelief, and scholars explain that she betrayed him in faith, not in honor. Despite being married to a prophet, she was not saved, showing that personal faith alone determines one's fate.
What did Nuh say when boarding the ark?
Nuh told the believers to board, saying, In the name of Allah is its course and its anchorage. Many Muslims still recite these words from Surah Hud when traveling, seeking Allah's protection on every journey by land, sea, or air.
Why is Nuh called a grateful servant?
In Surah Al-Isra, Allah describes Nuh as a truly grateful servant. Scholars explain that he sincerely praised Allah in every single situation, including when eating, drinking, and dressing, making gratitude a constant part of his daily life and his worship.
