The Story of Prophet Dawud

The story of Prophet Dawud is one of the most inspiring accounts in the Quran, combining prophethood, kingship, and devotion. Dawud, peace be upon him, began as a young soldier who defeated the giant Jalut, known in English as Goliath, and later became a just ruler of the Children of Israel. Allah revealed to him the Zabur, granted him a voice so beautiful that mountains and birds glorified with him, and softened iron in his hands. His fasting and night prayer became the most beloved forms of voluntary worship, and his son Sulaiman inherited both his prophethood and his kingdom.

Who Was Prophet Dawud?

Dawud was a prophet and king of the Children of Israel, descended from Prophet Ya’qub. The story of Prophet Dawud shows how Allah granted him a rare combination of spiritual and worldly gifts. Key facts about him include:

  • Role: prophet, messenger, and king.
  • Scripture: the Zabur, known as the Psalms.
  • Title in the Quran: a khalifah on earth, appointed to judge with justice.
  • Son: Prophet Sulaiman, who succeeded him.

قال الله تعالى: ﴿وَشَدَدْنَا مُلْكَهُ وَآتَيْنَاهُ الْحِكْمَةَ وَفَصْلَ الْخِطَابِ﴾

(سورة ص 38:20)

Allah says: “We strengthened his kingdom and granted him wisdom and sound judgment.”

(Surah Sad 38:20)

Dawud and Jalut (Goliath)

Dawud’s first appearance in the Quran comes in Surah Al-Baqarah, during the war between the Children of Israel and the army of Jalut. The events unfolded in these stages:

  1. Allah appointed Talut as king to lead the Children of Israel against their enemies.
  2. Talut tested his army at a river, and only a small, faithful group passed the test.
  3. Facing the mighty forces of Jalut, the believers prayed for patience, firmness, and victory.
  4. Young Dawud killed Jalut, and Allah gave him kingship and wisdom and taught him what He willed.

The Zabur (Psalms) of Dawud

The Story of Prophet Dawud

The Zabur is one of the revealed books named in the Quran, alongside the Torah, the Injil, and the Quran itself. Allah states that He gave Dawud the Zabur, and scholars describe it as a book of praise, supplication, wisdom, and moral guidance rather than detailed legislation, since Dawud followed the law of the Torah.

قال الله تعالى: ﴿وَآتَيْنَا دَاوُودَ زَبُورًا﴾ (سورة الإسراء 17:55)

Allah says: “And We gave Dawud the Zabur.” (Surah Al-Isra 17:55)

The Beautiful Voice of Prophet Dawud

Dawud was blessed with a voice of extraordinary beauty, which he used to glorify Allah. The Quran and Sunnah describe this gift in several ways:

  • Allah commanded the mountains to echo his glorification.
  • The birds gathered and joined him in praising Allah.
  • The Prophet ﷺ praised the recitation of Abu Musa al-Ash’ari by comparing it to the melodious voices of the family of Dawud.

Iron Softened for Prophet Dawud

Among Dawud’s miracles, Allah made iron soft in his hands and taught him a valuable skill. This blessing carried several benefits:

  • He crafted full coats of chain mail that protected soldiers in battle.
  • He measured the links precisely, as the Quran instructs.
  • He earned his living from his own handiwork, and the Prophet ﷺ praised him for eating only from what his hands produced.

Allah says: “And We made iron pliable for him, saying, ‘Make full coats of armor and measure the links carefully. And do righteousness, for I see all that you do.’”

(Surah Saba 34:10–11)

The Fast of Dawud (Sawm Dawud)

The Prophet ﷺ described the worship of Dawud as the most beloved to Allah among voluntary acts. It followed a balanced pattern:

  1. He fasted one day and broke his fast the next, continuing in this way throughout the year.
  2. He slept the first half of the night.
  3. He stood in prayer for one third of the night.
  4. He slept again for the final sixth before dawn.

This balance shows that true devotion combines commitment with care for the body.

Dawud and Sulaiman Father and Son

Sulaiman grew up under his father’s guidance and shared his wisdom from a young age. The Quran states that Sulaiman inherited from Dawud, meaning prophethood, knowledge, and kingship rather than wealth. Both were blessed with understanding, and both thanked Allah for favoring them over many of His believing servants.

Allah says: “And Sulaiman inherited from Dawud. He said, ‘O people, we have been taught the language of birds and have been given from all things. Indeed, this is a clear favor.’”

(Surah An-Naml 27:16)

Dawud is mentioned by name about sixteen times in the Quran. Key passages about his life include:
